Description

Zubiaurre, Pilar de. Evocaciones: articulos y diario (1909-1958). Edited by Iker Gonzalez-Allende. San Sebastian: Santurran, 2009.331 pp. ISBN: 978-84-934-4557-7 This compilation consists of the articles and diaries of Pilar de Zubiaurre (1884-1970), a Basque writer who left Spain in 1938 and spent the last 30 years ofher life in exile in Mexico City. A woman whose own life and work has historically been eclipsed by that of her brothers and husband, the painters Valentin and Ramon de Zubiaurre and the art critic Juan de la Encina, Zubiaurre is a fascinating figure for those interested in the situation of bourgeois women in Spain during the early part of the 20th century. While her use of pseudonyms for her published work no doubt contributed to the lack of attention she has historically received, they also reveal Zubiaurre to be a woman who pushed at the boundaries of social mores and one for whom her Basque heritage was very important. Her use of alternative names reflects a capitulation to the belief that women were not meant to inhabit public spaces. However, she continued to publish and the names she used to sign her texts ("Hulda de Garay" and "Landabarrenako Damia") identified her as a woman from Garai and a Basque woman, respectively. As Zubiaurre's published stories and previously unpublished diary entries make clear, her desires to develop an independent career as an artist were thwarted by the patriarchal constraints placed on her, but she nonetheless produced a body of work notable for both its historical and political breadth as well as its intimate discussions of Basque culture, the Spanish Civil War, and the everyday life of Spanish exiles.
